LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Maryland (0-4) fell in both of its Saturday games at the Stacy Winsberg Memorial Tournament, going down to UC Riverside 5-0 before dropping a close 4-3 decision to Cal Poly in extras.

Senior Skylynne Ellazar churned out a five-hit day at the plate, and now owns a .667 batting average on the season. Maryland will play its final game of the weekend tomorrow when the team plays Middle Tennessee State at 12 pm ET/9 am PT.

Game 1 – Box Score

UC Riverside used eight hits to score five runs and upend the Terps 5-0 in the team’s first game of the day Saturday. Senior Tayler Misfeldt recorded nine strikeouts while allowing just one hit as the Highlanders moved to 2-1 on the season.

The game was scoreless through the first inning, before the Highlanders opened up the scoring with a three-run second inning. Riverside would tack on runs in the sixth and seventh to eventually secure the five-run victory.

Freshman Ryan Denhart threw 5.0 innings in the contest to take the decision, while Sami Main and Lauren Graves closed the final two innings.

Game 2 – Box Score

Maryland battled back to force extras in its night cap against Cal Poly, but the rally fell short as the Terps fell to the Mustangs 4-3 in eight innings. UMD managed nine hits in the game, including a four-hit performance from Sky Ellazar to tie her career-high.

Cal Poly broke through in the third inning, using three hits to tally two runs. Maryland climbed back into it in the bottom of the frame, after sophomore Kassidy Cross connected on a one-out double to center field. A bunt single from freshman JoJo McRae would move Cross over to third, before Ellazar smacked a single past the shortstop to bring the Terps within one.

The tying run came later in the fourth, after sophomore Anna Kufta beat out the throw on a single to third base. That brought senior Jacqui Pascual to the plate, who cracked her first double of the season to right center to even the game at two.

The Mustangs countered in the sixth, plating an unearned run with two outs to retake the lead 3-2. Maryland didn’t go away though, getting consecutive singles from Brashear and Ellazar to put two on with one out. A pop up pushed Maryland to its final out of the game, but an error allowed freshman Taylor Wilson to reach first and load the bases.

A past ball then forced extras, after sailing high off the catcher’s glove and making way for Brashear to slide home and tie the game.

It was there the Mustangs got the eventual game-winning RBI from Noa Yakir. The Terps got a runner to third with one out in the bottom of the eighth, but couldn’t close the deal as Cal Poly clinched the one-run win.
