COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Executive athletic director Damon Evans announced Tuesday that Adam Hughes has been elevated to head coach of the Maryland volleyball program. Previously the associate head coach for the Terrapins, Hughes is the fifth head coach in program history.

“We had a thorough and extensive national search but throughout the process, Adam distinguished himself as the ideal head coach in this new era of Maryland volleyball,” Evans said. “Adam has helped change the culture and elevated our program to new heights over the past four seasons. He is bright, energetic and a rising star in the sport of volleyball. Adam is an excellent in-game tactician and his strong reputation as a national recruiter will help continue to guide us in the ultracompetitive Big Ten. A big part of Maryland’s ascension has been due to his tireless work with our student-athletes to achieve on and off the court. We are excited and confident that with Adam’s vision, he will continue to build upon the success that he has established in College Park.”

Hughes, 33, was promoted to associate head coach prior to the 2017 season after serving as an assistant coach from 2014-16. In the last four seasons, Hughes has played an instrumental role in transitioning the program into the nation’s best volleyball conference, the Big Ten. This past season, the Terps posted 18 wins, the most since 2010. Maryland also notched its best Big Ten finish, earning seven wins.

“I would first like to thank Damon Evans for this opportunity,” Hughes said. “I also need to thank our sport administrator, associate athletic director Kristen Brown and the entire search committee for believing in my vision to lead this program. I am indebted to Steve Aird for bringing me with him to College Park four years ago and trusting in me to help revitalize Maryland volleyball. My family and I are thrilled for the chance to continue the progress we have already made, and I couldn’t be more excited to embrace the opportunity.”

In the last two years, Maryland has brought in its first-ever ranked recruiting classes: No. 16 in 2016 and No. 10 in 2017. Hughes played a major role in bringing in six Under Armour All-Americans in the last two years, including four in the 2017 freshman class.

Hughes has helped increase excitement around the program as the Terps have set eight of their top-10 attendance records in the last four seasons.

In 2015, Hughes was named a recipient of the prestigious 'Thirty Under 30' award by the American Volleyball Coaches Association, which honors the top-30 up-and-coming volleyball coaches under the age of 30.

In addition, Hughes will retain assistant coach Kristin Carpenter and director of operations Kyle Thompson on his staff.

“We’re excited that Adam has retained Kristin and Kyle on his staff,” Evans said. “The continuity is very important as we are coming off a strong season. We feel this talented staff will help Maryland volleyball continue to make the necessary progress and continue our ascension in the Big Ten.

Before Maryland, Hughes served as director of operations at Penn State, helping the Nittany Lions to the 2013 NCAA Championship. He previously served as a manager and volunteer assistant at his alma mater from 2003-08. In nine seasons in State College, Hughes helped Penn State to three national titles and eight Big Ten Conference championships.

Hughes earned a bachelor's degree in economics from the Penn State Smeal School of Business in 2006.

A native of State College, Pa., Hughes and his wife Alice have a daughter, Harper.
