COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The Maryland wrestling team (3-4, 0-4 B1G) dropped its conference bout against the No. 7 Iowa Hawkeyes (6-0, 3-0 B1G) on Sunday.
The Hawkeyes featured a lineup that owned five ranked wrestlers, including No. 2 Brandon Sorensen at 149 and No. 3 Michael Kemerer at 157. Iowa's experience showed throughout the dual, picking up six wins by bonus points.
Maryland wasn't able to overcome the Hawkeyes in the tight bouts, with three matches decided by three points or fewer. That included the battle at 141, where No. 12 Ryan Diehl fell by one point after Iowa's Carter Happell earned an extra point for riding time.
"Every match in our conference is against a very talented opponent," head coach Kerry McCoy said. "Iowa is certainly one of those teams. They came out well and their lineup was strong from top to bottom. It's unfortunate we didn't get to see the two big guys go at it at heavyweight, but hopefully Youssif gets his chance at Midlands in a couple of weeks. We have a lot of time now for our guys to get healthy and hopefully come back with some renewed energy that will carry us through the seond half of our season."
