GILBERT, Ariz. – The coaching staff of the Maryland field hockey team was named the NFHCA Mid Atlantic Regional Coaching Staff of the Year Thursday. Head coach Missy Meharg, assistant coaches Katie Bam and Marvin Bam, and volunteer assistant coach Stefanie Fee were recognized as a staff.

Maryland won 11 of 13 games to end the season to make a run to its 18th NCAA Final Four as a program. The Terrapins picked up nine wins over ranked teams, including five over top 10 teams. That stretch included four straight victories over ranked opponents with wins over No. 25 Ohio State, No. 6 Penn State, No. 3 Virginia and No. 21 Rutgers.

Maryland then beat Wake Forest and won at second-seeded Duke to make the semifinals of the NCAA Division I Tournament, where the Terps took out third-seeded Michigan by a 5-1 final to advance to the championship.

Maryland fell in a close 2-1 contest to top-seed Connecticut in the national title game and finished the season with a 16-7 record.

This marked Meharg’s 30th season at the helm of the Maryland program. She’s led them to a record of 543-135-9 (.797), seven NCAA titles, 23 conference titles and 17 Final Fours. She has been named NFHCA National Coach of the Year an unprecedented nine times in her career.

All three assistants bring Olympic experience to the Terrapin staff, with Katie Bam and Fee both competing in the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio. Katie Bam also competed in the 2012 London Olympic Games and Marvin Bam competed in the 2008 Beijing Olympics with the South African national team.

The other NFHCA Division I Regional Coaching Staff of the Year honors went to the staffs from Connecticut (Mideast), Boston University (Northeast), North Carolina (South) and Michigan (West).

Former Terrapin Tara Zollinger is the head coach at Shippensburg and led the Raiders to a repeat national title. She and her staff were honored as the NFHCA Division II Regional Coaching Staff of the Year in the Atlantic Region.
