MADISON, Wis. – Freshman outside hitter paced the Terps with 12 kills as the Maryland volleyball team (16-10, 5-9 Big Ten) dropped to No. 8 Wisconsin (16-7, 7-7) in four sets (13-25, 25-21, 14-25, 13-25) on Saturday evening.

“I think we had a few good moments, but Wisconsin is a talented team and was able to string together runs,” head coach Steve Aird said. “We need to be more consistent and keep working.”

Freshman libero Samantha Burgio tied for the match lead with 17 digs while freshman middle blocker Jada Gardner set a career high with seven blocks.

The Terrapins picked the second set off the Badgers. It was the first time Maryland has won a set against Wisconsin since Sept. 6, 1996.

The teams tied seven times to start set one before the Badgers were able to use a 5-0 run to take a 17-11 lead. A 7-0 run for the home team put Wisconsin ahead 24-13. After Gardner extended the set with a kill, the Badgers finished the game, 25-13.

Gardner had three blocks in the second as the Terps were able to take the set. Service aces from Samantha Drechsel and Pritchard put Maryland ahead, 10-5, and Gardner posted a solo block to increase the lead to 16-10. Hailey Murray had a pair of kills later in the set, and Maryland reached set point on a Drechsel-Gardner block. Gardner combined with Angel Gaskin to seal the set, 25-21.

The Terps struggled out of the intermission as Wisconsin took a quick 5-1 lead. A 7-0 run pushed the Badger lead to 15-6. Murray and Milana had solo blocks and Pritchard and Milana had late kills, but Wisconsin was able to close the game, 25-14.

The Badgers posted six blocks in the fourth to limit Maryland’s offense. The Terps held a 4-1 lead but Wisconsin worked back to tie at 8-8. The Badgers used a 9-0 run to push ahead 16-8. Prichard posted three kills late in the set, but Wisconsin won 25-13.

The Terps continue their tough stretch next week at No. 7 Nebraska and at No. 1 Penn State.m
