Terps Head to ITA Atlantic Regionals

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Maryland women’s tennis team will be headed to Blacksburg, Va., this weekend for the ITA Atlantic Regional Tournament.

The tournament will feature some of the premier tennis programs in the Atlantic Region, with winners of the singles and doubles flights advancing to the prestigious ITA National Indoors at the Billie Jean King Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, N.Y.

Last season Maryland seniors Kristina Hovsepyan and Alexandra Stanova won the doubles bracket at ITA Atlantic Regionals and advanced to the national tournament in New York.

Play at ITA Atlantic Regionals will begin on Friday morning with the two rounds of singles qualifying. Freshman Zoe Kulkarni will be taking on Gabriela Araujo of VCU and sophomore Katsiaryna Yemelyanenka will face Maria Decamps of George Washington.

The Round of 64 will take place on Friday afternoon. Heralded freshman Eva Alexandova will make her Terrapin debut as the No. 6 overall seed. She will take on Camille Favero of Virginia. Sophomore Arnelle Sullivan will face Camila Moreno of Pittsburgh, Millie Stretton will compete against Elizabeth Norman of James Madison and senior Ekaterina Tour – the No. 12 ranked player in the tournament -- will face Lauren Goodman of William & Mary.

Saturday will begin with the Round of 32 and 16 of the doubles bracket. The duo of Tour and Alexandrova are ranked No. 2 in the bracket and will have a bye into the Round of 32 where they will compete against a team from either Pittsburgh or William and Mary.

Maryland will also send out the doubles pair of Sullivan and Strtton who also have a bye as the No. 11 seed. Finally, the duo of Yemelyanenka and Kulkarni, who won the doubles flight at the Navy Blue and Gold Invitational last week, will face Baron/Disbergen of host Virginia Tech, with the winner advancing to face Taniellan/Thaler of William & Mary.

Saturday afternoon will feature the Round of 64 Main draw for singles.

Sunday will be the quarterfinals of the doubles bracket, as well as the Round of 32 and 16 for singles play. Monday will be the semifinals of doubles, the quarterfinals of singles and will conclude with doubles finals.

The final day of play, Tuesday, will feature the semifinals and finals of the singles flight.
