ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The 15th-ranked Maryland field hockey team (6-5, 2-2 B1G) fell to No. 6 Michigan (8-2, 4-0) on a last second Wolverines goal in a double overtime thriller Friday night at Ocker Field.

Maryland tied the game up twice in regulation off goals from senior Lein Holsboer and junior Melissa Wilken, then both teams played just under 30 minutes of scoreless seven-on-seven, golden goal overtime until the Wolverines scored in the final second of the match.

"Today was a defining contest for our group," head coach Missy Meharg said. "We battled back from a two-goal deficit and had several opportunities to win in the first overtime period. Michigan is a strong veteran team and helped us grow today. We are proud of every one of our players. Our bench was electric and put us in the right mindset to get the outcome."

Michigan got on the board first, just 1:06 into the game, when Carly Bennett tapped in a ball in front of the cage. The Wolverines made it a two-goal lead when Halle O’Neill tapped one in in the 21st minute.

Holsboer got the Terrapins on the board six minutes later when she carried it in from the left side and scored. Maryland trailed 2-1 at halftime.

With 9:45 remaining, Wilken tied the game off a reverse chip shot for her first goal of the year. The Terrapins pushed it to their first overtime match of the season.

After 29:59 of scoreless overtime, Emma Way scored the game-winner for Michigan when she collected a loose ball and knocked it in.

Michigan took 21 shots to Maryland’s nine. Maryland goalkeeper Sarah Holliday made seven saves.

Maryland was tabbed as the No. 15 team in the country in the Penn Monto/Division I Coaches poll released Sept. 26.
