COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The 11th-ranked Maryland field hockey team shut down No. 9 Louisville, 1-0, Sunday afternoon at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex behind a strong defensive effort.

The Terrapins (3-2) outshot the Cardinals (4-2), 19-8, and controlled both ends of the field throughout the match.

“This was exciting for us,” head coach Missy Meharg. “It’s exciting to press that hard and get something out of it. We’ve been working really hard athletically. We’re rotating 16 players. As I said Friday, it’s just a matter of time until a lot of shots start coming through. We had 13 shots in the first half and six in the second with four penalty corners. Louisville is a great team. They have a ton of talent, so just a great win for us as we grow together.”

Bodil Keus scored the game’s lone goal when she banged one into the lower right corner of the cage off a penalty corner in the 48th minute. Madison Maguire assisted on the play.

Maryland controlled the first half, taking 11 shots to Louisville’s four. Terps goalkeeper Sarah Holliday made two saves in the first 35 minutes. The teams were scoreless at the break.

The Terrapins started the second half with a pair of corners, but the Louisville defense picked up stops on both. Holliday notched four saves to preserve the shutout.

Next, Maryland will open Big Ten play at Indiana Friday at 3 p.m. in Bloomington. The Terps-Hoosiers game on Friday will be streamed online through BTN Plus. Fans can watch with their BTN Plus subscriptions. Fans outside the U.S. can watch here.
