Terps Top Tribe, Finish Unbeaten in Non-Con

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Senior Madison Turner scored in the third minute to lift the Maryland’s women’s soccer team over William & Mary, 1-0, at Ludwig Field Thursday night.

With the win, the Terrapins (6-0-1) finish their non-conference slate unbeaten for the first time since the 2011 season. Turner’s goal was her second in as many matches.

Junior Jarena Harmon did the work before Turner’s goal, depossessing a Tribe defender 25 yards away from goal before slipping a pass into the stride of Turner, who finished with her right foot from eight yards out.

From that point, Maryland controlled most of the match. William & Mary piled on the pressure in the final 15 minutes and found their best chances during that period, but could not find an equalizing goal.

The Terps had a hold on the pace of the game and created numorous chances for a second goal. With seven minutes remaining in the first half, freshman Hope Lewandoski lifted a ball over the top to Kady Badham. The sophomore tried to poke the ball past the keep from close range, but her shot was saved.

Turner continued to be a menance to the Tribe defense throughout proceedings and hit the crossbar early in the second half. Badham once against latched onto a Lewandoski ball, but her hard right-footed blast was parried away.

Senior Kate Waters tested the keeper with a 19-yard rocket with 21 minutes to go.Freshman Gi Krstec had a solid effort that just went wide minutes later.

Maryland outshot the Tribe 15-8. Maryland’s centerback pairing of sophomore Julia New, senior Hope Gouterman thrwarted William & Mary’s pushes forward throughout the night. Junior Jenna Surdick was also solid in her fullback spot.

The Terps return to action Sunday, Sept. 17 at Rutgers to begin Big Ten play. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 and fans can watch the match on BTN Plus.
