COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The No. 44 Maryland women’s tennis team (14-5, 5-4 B1G) reached the highest single-spring season win total in program history on Saturday when the Terps knocked off Rutgers, 6-1.
The previous record for wins in a season was 13, which was accomplished by the 2011 squad.
Maryland continued its doubles dominance to begin play and picked up the doubles point for the third consecutive match. Wins from Alexandra Stanova and Kristina Hovsepyan at first doubles, as well as Ekaterina Tour and Caroline Williams at the second position, gave Maryland the point for the 16th time this season.
There was no slowing down for the Terps when singles began. Hovsepyan got things started at fourth singles with a 6-2, 6-3 victory, with Tour following suit and picking up a win shortly after. With the Terps needing one more point to clinch a victory, Arnelle Sullivan closed out a 6-1, 6-2 win at third singles.
"I'm very proud of the team today," head coach Daria Panova said. "We've spent a lot of time this season talking about staying focused and competing until the very end of the match. I think we did a great job of that today. We came out strong in doubles to start the match and we kept that going when we took the court for singles. I'm happy with the way we played today and am looking forward to closing out the regular season next weekend."
Maryland also earned singles points from Stanova and freshman Katsiaryna Yemelyanenka after clinching the victory.
The Terps will be back in action on Friday, April 21 when they take on Minnesota at 3 p.m.
