COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Maryland took on one of the top pitchers in the Big Ten Friday evening, as Michigan’s Megan Betsa struck out 14 en route to a 5-1 win for the visiting Wolverines. The Michigan ace went the distance at Maryland Stadium, allowing just one hit to bump her squad to 29-8-1 (9-1 B1G) on the year.

That one hit came off the bat of freshman Anna Kufta, who launched a ball over the left field fence to put the Terps on the board in the first inning. It was her team-leading fifth home run of the season, and tied the game at one early.

Madison Martin had a quality outing in the circle for Maryland, pitching all seven frames with four strikeouts while allowing just four earned runs. Fans were treated to a stellar individual performance in center field in the fifth inning, as freshman Amanda Brashear made a diving grab to rob a hit.

Michigan answered back in the top of the second, as a RBI single from Faith Canfield put the visitors back ahead 2-1. The Terps looked for a way in on Betsa as the game wore on, but the Wolverine senior continued to get ahead in counts and force outs.

UM managed three more runs on the evening, as a two-run home run and run on an error added insurance late.

Maryland and Michigan will return to the diamond to play the second leg of their weekend series tomorrow at 1 pm.
