COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Redshirt senior Madison Martin tossed her second one-hitter of the season Monday afternoon, going the distance to shut out St. John’s, 3-0. The Edmond, Oklahoma native threw just 68 pitches in the contest at Maryland Stadium to earn the win, while a first inning offensive flurry made the difference for the Terrapins (7-20-1).

Juli Strange led things off with a single in the bottom of the first, and was sacrificed over to second by Amanda Brashear to give the Terps an early scoring opportunity. A walk and ground out would put runners on second and third, and Skylynne Ellazar came through clutch with two outs with a hard hit ball to right field.

A single turned into two RBIs and multiple bases on an error by the right fielder, and another single from Hannah Dewey would give the Terps a 3-0 edge after one.

The game turned defensive from that point on, as Martin continued to get ahead in counts and force ground outs and pop ups inning after inning. The Red Storm’s lone hit came in the fourth on a double, but Martin and the Maryland defense shut things down from there making quick work of the visitors’ lineup.

Maryland will now shift its focus to conference play, as the team will play its first Big Ten series this weekend against Ohio State. The Terps will open the series up on Friday, March 24 at 6:00 pm, with games to follow Saturday (1:00 pm) and Sunday (1:00 pm).
