COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Junior right-handed pitcher Brian Shaffer struck out a career-high 10 over eight scoreless innings to lead the Maryland baseball team past Princeton, 4-0, at Bob “Turtle” Smith Stadium Friday afternoon.

Shaffer at one point retired 17 straight for the Terrapins (10-6), who backed up their starter with a six-run fourth inning. Maryland’s offense put runners on in each of the first five innings before finally breaking through in the sixth.

Princeton’s offense struggled from the onset against Shaffer, who retired the side in order in the first and struck out the side, around a double, in the second. After the one-out double, Shaffer retired the next 17 batters he faced.

Shaffer’s career-high ninth K came in the seventh. His 10 total is the most for a Maryland pitcher in a game since Mike Shawaryn struck out 16 in the Big Ten Tournament against Indiana on May 25, 2017.

Maryland’s offensive breakthrough came in the sixth. Back-to-back singles from seniors Brandon Gum and Nick Cieri put two on for junior Will Watson, who singled in Gum to give Maryland the lead. Watson finished the day 3-for-4 from the plate.

After senior Madison Nickens struck out, junior Kevin Smith blasted a three-run homer to right field. It was the junior’s first of the season.

Shaffer was taken out after eight innings and replaced by sophomore Andrew Miller, who retired the side in order in the ninth to finish the game. Miller has not allowed a run in his nine innings of relief work this season.

Maryland is back on the diamond tomorrow against Princeton, with first pitch set for 2 p.m. Fans can listen to the game live on the Maryland Baseball Network.
