COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Sixteen former standouts for the Maryland women’s lacrosse team were selected in the inaugural Women’s Professional Lacrosse League Wednesday. The Terps feature the most players in the league of any university.
The WPLL consists of five teams: Baltimore Brave, New England Command, New York Fight, Philadelphia Fire and Upstate Pride.
Defender Alice Mercer ‘16 was Maryland’s highest draft pick as she was taken third overall by New York. She will be joined on the Fight by defender Shanna Brady ’15, midfielder Taylor Cummings ’16, goalie Emily Kift ’17, midfielder Kelly McPartland ’15, defender Casey Pepperman ’15, midfielder Zoe Stukenberg ’17 and attacker Caroline Wannen ’17.
Defender Nadine Hadnagy ’17 was the first selection of the second round by the Upstate Pride and will be teammates with Alex Aust ’13.
Midfielder Bryn Boucher ’16, attacker Dana Dobbie ’08, midfielder Beth Glaros ’14 and attacker Brooke Griffin ’15 will compete for the Baltimore Brave. Defender Megan Douty ’15 is Maryland’s sole representative on the New England Command while midfielder Katie Schwarmann ’13 is the only Terp on the Philadelphia roster
The first season will kick off in summer 2018. One hundred players were drafted Wednesday, and the league will hold a supplemental draft following the 2018 NCAA season. WPLL players will be in action during the Inaugural Weekend at US Lacrosse headquarters on Sept. 30, which will feature a Showcase Game and Legends Celebration.
