COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Junior running back/kick returner Ty Johnson has been named Big Ten Conference Special Teams Player of the Week after registering his first career kick return touchdown with a 100-yard return in the first quarter at No. 10 Ohio State. Johnson’s touchdown marked the 37th 100-yard kickoff return touchdown in Big Ten history and the first since fellow Terp William Likely III did so against Iowa on Oct. 31, 2015.
The Cumberland, Maryland native averaged 31.5 yards per return on six attempts against the Buckeyes. He also led the Terps with 57 rushing yards on 12 attempts (4.8 ypc.).
It’s the second career Big Ten weekly honor for Johnson, who earned Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week on October 3, 2016.
Johnson is the second Terp to garner weekly recognition from the league as Antoine Brooks was named co-Special Teams Player of the Week on September 4 after Maryland’s win at Texas.
The Terps return to action this Saturday when they host Northwestern. The game is set to kick at 3:30 and will be broadcast on ESPN2 and the Maryland Sports Radio Network.
