COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- University of Maryland senior running back Ty Johnson headlines a list of five Terps named to the Athlon Sports preseason All-Big Ten team, which was released on Wednesday.
Johnson, who led the Terps and ranked eighth in the Big Ten with 875 rushing yards last year, landed on the All-Big Ten third team as an all-purpose player and kick returner. During his junior campaign, Johnson averaged 6.4 yards per carry, which ranked third in the conference, and his 132.7 all-purpose yards per game average was fourth best in the league.
Joining Johnson on the third team offense is offensive lineman Derwin Gray. As a junior, Gray was an anchor on Maryland’s offensive line, starting all 12 games at left tackle. He helped the Terps rush for 1,940 yards and 161.7 yards per game. Gray, a Washington, D.C. native, blocked his first career field goal, which was scooped and ran back for a 71-yard touchdown, in Maryland’s win at Texas.
Also recognized on the offensive side of the ball is senior wide receiver Taivon Jacobs, who was named to the fourth team. Jacobs ranked second on the team in nearly every receiving category last year, compiling 47 catches for 553 yards and five touchdowns.
On the defensive side of the ball, junior Antoine Brooks was recognized on the third team and senior Jesse Aniebonam earned a fourth team nod despite missing nearly all of the 2017 season with an injury.
Brooks, who played in all 12 games with 11 starts in 2017, ranked second on the team with 77 tackles. One of the top playmakers on the defense, Brooks paced the team with 9.5 tackles for loss and was third on the squad with two interceptions. Brooks made one of the most memorable plays of the 2017 season when he scooped a blocked field and ran it back for a 71-yard touchdown in Maryland’s win at Texas.
Aniebonam led Maryland with 14 tackles for loss and nine sacks in 2016. He ranked fifth in the Big Ten in sacks per game during his junior season.
