LINCOLN, Neb. – Nebraska scored 16 unanswered runs to overcome an 8-1 Maryland lead and square up series with an 17-8 win Saturday afternoon at Haymarket Park.
The Terrapins (20-26, 6-10 Big Ten) led 8-1 after one and a half innings, but Nebraska fought back in front of a lively crowd in Lincoln. Senior Will Watson led the way offensively with three hits and two RBIs.
Maryland jumped on Nebraska senior right-hander Luis Alvarado in the first. AJ Lee and Marty Costes drew walks before Watson singled to center. Zach Jancarski hit the next pitch over the fence in left for a grand slam.
After a solo home run gave Nebraska a run, Maryland plated four more in the top half of the second. Consecutive walks issued to Lee, Nick Dunn and Costes loaded the bases and chased Alvarado. Watson then singled through the left side to score a pair before Taylor Wright doubled in the gap to make it and 8-1 game.
From there, it was all Nebraska. The Huskers cut into the lead with three in the second, one in the third and two in the fifth. In the seventh, Nebraska took the lead on a Jaxson Hallmark two-run shot off RHP Sean Fisher with two outs. The Huskers then poured it on with seven runs in the eighth.
The Terps and Huskers will decide the series tomorrow afternoon at 2:05 p.m. Coverage can been seen on BTN Plus or heard on the Maryland Baseball Network.
