URBANA, Ill. – Illinois scored 11 runs in three innings to capture a 11-0 victory over Maryland the first leg of a three-game series Friday afternoon. The Illini (23-13, 4-4 B1G) tallied 10 hits and allowed just two base runners in the contest to secure the win, while Maryland (15-21, 5-1 B1G) managed just one hit in five innings.
Illinois got on the board with a two-out rally in the first, as a double just inside the left field line scored the game’s first run. A single up the middle would make it 2-0, before a ground out ended the inning with the bases loaded.
Maryland’s lone hit came off the bat of Jacqui Pascual in the second, before a marathon bottom half gave Illinois the chunk of its runs in the games. Six hits and a series of miscues in the field turned into eight runs for the hosts, while they tacked on one more in the third.
The teams will meet for game two tomorrow at Eichelberger Field at 1:00 pm ET/2:00 pm CT.
