COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Senior Skylynne Ellazar hit a fourth inning home run and junior Sydney Golden threw a complete game shutout to seal a 1-0 win over Iowa Sunday. The victory completed a three-game sweep over the Hawkeyes (15-17, 1-4), Maryland’s first conference sweep since 2015, and the Terps now move to 15-20 on the season and 5-1 in Big Ten play.

Golden was fantastic all weekend, throwing 13.0 innings of shutout ball while striking out nine and earning two wins. Maryland has now won five straight games, its longest streak since 2015, and has captured victories in eight of its last 11 games.

The decisive run came in the fourth inning with no outs, as Ellazar went to the plate looking for her first hit of the day. She smashed a 2-2 pitch from Iowa’s Allison Doocy over the scoreboard in centerfield, as the swing broke a scoreless tie after three. The Kahului, Hawaii native was 5-for-12 on the weekend with three RBIs and two runs, and is hitting .524 in conference play after two weekends.

Maryland’s defense was perfect in the field on the day, committing no errors to compliment Golden’s gem on the mound. The Terps committed just three errors during the three game series, and hold a 98.1% fielding percentage through Big Ten play.

Iowa’s biggest threat came in the top of the second, after getting two singles and a fielder’s choice to load the bases. Golden didn’t flinch, forcing a one-out grounder to Brigette Nordberg at third base to pull a 5-2-3 double play. Iowa would manage a two-out double in the top of the seventh, but Golden again clamped down forcing a ground out to end the game.

Maryland will carry the weekend’s momentum into Champaign, Ill. for a three-game series with Illinois (22-13, 3-4).
