ROSEMONT, Ill. – Freshman Virunpat Olankitkunchai of the Maryland women's golf team was named Big Ten Golfer of the Week Wednesday for her first career weekly honor.
In just her eighth collegiate tournament, Olankitkunchai finished with a one-under-par 215 (69-75-71) to take seventh overall in the individual standings at the Hurricane Invitational Sunday in Coral Gables, Fla.
Olankitkunchai’s performance was highlighted by a three-under-par, collegiate-best 69 in the first round. She shot a three-over-par 75 in the second round and a one-under-par 71 in the final round to secure her spot in the top 10 in the individual standings. Her 54-hole score of 215 was also a collegiate best.
Led by Olankitkunchai, Maryland finished fifth out of 13 teams with a team combined score of 888 (297-294-297), which was 24-over-par overall.
Next, Maryland will compete in the Briar’s Creek Invitational March 19-20 in Charleston, S.C.
