UMTerps.com recently caught up with two-time Super Bowl champion Torrey Smith, who is getting ready to hold his annual celebrity charity basketball game at Royal Farms Arena in Baltimore this Saturday. The former Terp great shared why this charity basketball game is so important to him and what his life has been like since garnering his second Super Bowl ring.
Q: Why is this event so special to you and explain why it's so important for you to stay connected with the youth in the state of Maryland.
A: “For me this event is extremely important. It gives me another opportunity to be back. It's more than just a charity event and a fundraiser. It's all about getting people together. It's great to look around and see different families from all over Maryland. It's such a great experience."
Q: Now in its seventh year, how has this event grown and what can fans expect this year?
A: “It's grown a lot over the years. Fans can always expect to watch some football guys attempt to ball out on the court and have a great time interacting with their families. There's a lot of activities going on around the game that are very interactive. And then us as players try to be as interactive as we can be with the fans as well."
Q: There will be some big-time athletes out there on Saturday. Who are you most excited to lace them up against?
A: “For me this game is always kind of a reunion. I always look forward to getting back with the guys that we won the Super Bowl with in Baltimore. Guys like Anquan Boldin, Jacoby Jones and Ray Rice. Really all of the guys that I've played with in the past. It's a great opportunity for us to get back together and have a good time."
Q: You're just the fourth player from the University of Maryland to win multiple Super Bowl titles. How special is it to have won two Super Bowls in just seven years and to represent the University of Maryland on the biggest stage?
A: “It's huge. I know how fortunate you have to be to be in this position. There are a lot of great players that haven't had the opportunity to win one so to be a part of multiple Super Bowls is special. You understand how hard it is to get there and to represent the University of Maryland on that stage is huge because we have some really good ball players out of our school and to join that club is really cool."
Q: You attended the men's basketball regular season finale and received a standing ovation. How cool was it to be back on campus and to get that reception from Maryland fans?
A: “It means a lot. Every time I'm at Maryland it seems like home. It is home. The fans always show a lot of love to myself and my family and it means a lot because I know how important that university and those fans were to me when I played there and still are to me when I come back."
