Each week, umterps.com will take a look at a Maryland women's soccer alum and what they are doing in their post Maryland life. This week is former midfielder Mallory Mahar!
Years Played/Position: 2002-2006/Center Midfield
Major: Studio Art
Post Maryland: I didn’t do much with that (Studio Art) degree but at the very end of my time in CP, I took a few computer graphics courses and really enjoyed them so I went to graduate school to learn more. At SCAD, I got a double Masters of Arts in visual effects and animation. From there, I shipped out to LA to work on movies. I got transferred to Vancouver where I currently work at Sony Imageworks. Our current project is Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation. I have 6 movie credits for my short 5-year career. I work as a lighting and compositing artist.
Why Maryland: I chose Maryland because the ACC was an amazing soccer conference at the time, Maryland was a perfect distance from Ohio, I was to be coached by one of the world's greatest female players (Shannon Cirovski), I would be close to the nation’s capital and the campus and team totally matched with my energy. It was an immediate match.
Advice for current players: Enjoy your time in CP, this time of your life and your teammates. It’ll end and it’ll be hard to to reconnect with those teammates when life gets crazy. But you will always carry the memories with you; soak it up. And take advantage of your metabolism, eat all the things because that doesn’t last forever either. Also — look at the bigger picture, set yourself up for something you like to do after college.
