COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Freshman Zoe Kulkarni earned her third-consecutive singles victory but the Maryland women's tennis team (3-4, 0-0 B1G) fell to VCU (8-2), 4-3 on Saturday.
Kulkarni's 7-6 (3), 6-2 win at sixth singles came after sweeping a pair of matches against Long Beach State and George Washington last weekend.
"VCU played well today and they're a strong team," head coach Daria Panova said. "I was happy with the way Ekaterina and Zoe played, and I think we just had other opportunities that we weren't able to take advantage of today. We'll use the upcoming days to get better before heading to Princeton on Friday."
Maryland captured the doubles point for the fifth time this season behind a pair of victories at first and third doubles. Arnelle Sullivan and Saya Usui put Maryland ahead with a 6-4 win at third doubles, and Eva Alexandrova and Millie Stretton were able to close it out with a 7-5 win at the first singles position.
It was Alexandrova and Stretton's fouth win of the season at the top doubles spot in Maryland's lineup. Sullivan and Usui's win gave them three victories together this season.
Senior Ekaterina Tour put the first singles point of the day on the board when she picked up a 6-1, 6-2 win at second singles. It was her second-consecutive singles victory and her third singles win of the season.
After VCU cut into Maryland's lead with a win at fourth singles, Kulkarni was able to keep the Terps ahead with her win at sixth singles.
The Rams were then able to win three-consecutive matches at first, third and fifth singles to take the victory.
Maryland will be back on the court on Friday, Mar. 2 when the Terrapins head to Princeton for a 3 p.m. showdown.
