GENEVA, Ohio - The first day of the Big Ten Indoor Track & Field Championships showcased a podium performance from Jewel Smith in the long jump, a lifetime best throw by Claudia Ababio in the shot put, and a new school record in the Distance Medley Relay.
Jewel Smith set a new personal best in the long jump to place 3rd and earn a podium finish in this event. Smith’s jump of 20’01 ¾” earned her All-Big Ten status. Kayla Richardsonplaced 13th in the long jump with a leap of 5.82m (19’01 ¼”).
Claudia Ababio had a lifetime best in the shot put to earn an 8th place finish in this event. The senior put together the strongest series of throws in her career, posting a best mark of 16.00m (52’06”).
Dallyssa Huggins started off day one of competition at the Big Ten indoor championships with a 7thplace finish in the Pentathlon. Huggins had standout performances in the High Jump (5’8 ¾”) and the 800m (2:14.42). Over the course of the competition Huggins competed in the 60H, Long Jump, and Shot Put as well for a total score of 3825 points.
Brittany Lang posted a lifetime best in the 3000m run. Lang ran 9:49.78 to place 13th overall in the competition.
The women’s distance medley relay squad capped off the evening with a 5th place finish and new school record in this event. The team was comprised of Christine Laurie (1200m), Cheyenne Jones (400m), Emily Bracher(800m), and Alexandra Lucki (1600m). Their finishing time of 11:25.37 surpassed the previous record that was set at the 2017 Big Ten championships.
Day two of competition will get started on Saturday morning with the High Jump and Weight Throw.
