COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Behind three wins from its freshmen class, the Maryland women’s tennis (3-3 0-0 B1G) team beat George Washington Sunday afternoon, 6-1.

Freshmen Eva Alexandrova and Zoe Kulkarni were victorious at first and sixth singles respectively. Alexandrova earned a tough, three-set win while Kulkarni won her second straight-set dual match of the weekend.

Fellow reshman Anastasiia Gevel also impressed in her singles matchup against Sara Grubac, winning 6-2, 7-6, for her first ever-collegiate victory.

“I think we did a great job today. head coach Daria Panova said. “We did a good job fighting through some things and for us to get a finish on most of the courts was really great. We won 6-1 and I’m proud of the girls finishing the weekend well. There are some things we can learn from and will work through in practice this week before returning to the courts against VCU next weekend.

Maryland got started by taking an early lead over the Colonials after earning the doubles point for the fourth time this season. Junior Arnelle Sullivan and sophomore Saya Usui got the first win, 6-1, and Tour and sophomore partner Katsiaryna Yemelyanenka cruised to a 6-2 victory to secure the 1-0 lead for the Terrapins.

Tour got the Terps their second point of the day with an impressive victory at the second singles positon. Freshman Zoe Kulkarni then gave Maryland a three-point lead shortly after, winning both sets, 6-3.

After the Colonials earned a point with a win at fourth singles, Gevel secured the victory for the Terps with her win at the fifth singles position. Alexandrova (6-4, 2-6, 6-3) and junior Millie Stretton (4-6, 6-3, 6-2) both locked in wins to finish off the afternoon and give the Terps their third win at home this season.

Maryland will be back in action Saturday when the Terps take on VCU at the JTCC. The match is scheduled to begin at noon. Live updates will be provided on Twitter and fans can stream the match here. A stats feed will also be provided.
