COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Led by its freshmen, the Maryland women’s tennis (2-3, 0-0 B1G) team topped Long Beach State on Saturday by a final score of 5-2.

Eva Alexandrova posted a 2-0 record on the day, winning at first doubles with Millie Stretton and then following it with a 6-3, 6-3 win at the first singles position.

Fellow freshman Zoe Kulkarni earned her second collegiate dual win, besting Long Beach State’s Carlota Casasampere, 6-2, 6-3.

“I’m happy with the way we played today,” head coach Daria Panova said. “I think we saw a lot of fight in our team whether they won or lost. Katya dropped her first set but came out fighting in the second to force a third, and Millie bounced back after dropping her second set to win in the third. Overall it was a good performance and we’re hoping to keep it going tomorrow.”

Maryland got the early edge over the Beach after it earned the doubles point for the third time this season. Ekaterina Tour and Katsiaryna Yemelyanenka cruised to a 6-1 victory at the second doubles position, and Alexandrova and Stretton clinched the point with a 6-4 win at first doubles.

The Terps kept the pressure on when singles play began, rattling off three-consecutive wins to clinch the match victory.

Kulkarni was the first Terp to finish in singles, which was followed by Yemelyanenka’s 6-0, 6-4 win at fourth singles. Alexandrova then was able to clinch the match for Maryland with her victory at the number one singles position.

Following the clinch, Long Beach picked up wins at second and sixth singles. Stretton was able to pick up a 6-1, 1-6, 6-2 win at third singles for Maryland.

Maryland will be back in action on Sunday when the Terps battle George Washington at the JTCC. The match is scheduled to begin at noon. Live updates will be provided on Twitter and fans can stream the match here. A stats feed will also be provided.
