ROSEMONT, Ill. – Sophomore midfielder Lizzie Colson was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week, the league announced on Tuesday.
Colson played a big role in Maryland's dominant defensive effort in an 18-7 season-opening win over William & Mary on Sunday.
The Terps raced out to an 11-0 lead and the defense didn't allow a goal until the 12:40 mark of the first half. Colson tied for the team lead in both caused turnovers (2) and groundballs (2). She also ranked second on the team with three draw control wins.
Colson and the top-ranked Terps (1-0) travel to No. 3 Florida (1-0) for a key early season non-conference matchup with the Gators on Saturday. The opening draw is set for noon.
