COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Senior attacker Megan Whittle and junior attacker Caroline Steele scored four goals each as the No. 1 Maryland women’s lacrosse team (1-0) defeated William & Mary (0-1) 18-7 on Sunday afternoon to open the 2018 season.
The Terps tallied nine goals in the first 8:12 of the game and led 15-2 at halftime. Both Steele and junior midfielder Jen Giles posted hat tricks by the intermission. Giles finished the game with three goals and an assist. Junior midfielder Meghan Siverson was the fourth Terp to score multiple goals, scoring once in both halves.
Senior attacker Taylor Hensh, sophomore attacker Brindi Griffin, sophomore attacker/midfielder Kali Hartshorn and sophomore midfielder Nikki Sliwak each scored once. In her collegiate debut, freshman midfielder Grace Griffin also scored.
"I'm really proud of the way we came out today," said Maryland Head Coach Cathy Reese. "We opened our 2018 season really strong. I thought we were firing on all cylinders from the opening whistle. We were really connecting on offense, performed well on the draw and defensively were very disciplined. Today provided an excellent opportunity for us to see a number of different goal scorers and get valuable playing experience for much of the team."
Junior goalie Megan Taylor started in net, but the Terps played three goalies in the win. Freshman goalie Madison Hine led the team with three saves in nearly 12 minutes of action.
Maryland's defense was exceptional in the first half, not allowing a goal until the 12:40 mark. Sophomore midfielder Lizzie Colson and Grace Griffin led the Terps with two caused turnovers each.
Junior attacker Maddie Torgerson led the Tribe with two goals.
Maryland is now 35-9 all-time in season openers. Reese is undefeated to start the season in 12 years at Maryland.
The Terps are back in action at No. 5 Florida on Saturday, Feb. 17 at noon.
