Meet the Terp: Shelby Younkin

Shelby Younkin comes to Maryland from Torrance, California where she was a two-time Coliseum League and All-Pioneer League selection at South Torrance High School. She played her club ball with the Corona Angels and her career plans include archeology and forensic anthropology. Get to know Shelby Younkin


How was your first semester at Maryland?

My first semester at Maryland was full of a lot of new things. The changing of seasons was the most intriguing part of it, because being from California I have never experienced a true fall.

What attracted you to the University of Maryland?

The family atmosphere that Coach Wright allows us to create within the team. She is committed to not only making us great players, but strong women off the field.

What is your favorite memory from playing softball?

My favorite memory of playing softball was winning CIF my senior year.

How has it been getting to know your teammates?

It has been pretty amazing. It’s nice to be on a team where everyone is on the same page and at the same talent level.

Are you a good cook, what's your favorite thing to make?

I am a terrible cook, but at the same time I don’t really cook. I follow directions well if that counts.

What is your favorite thing about yourself?

My favorite thing about myself is that I am honest and very trustworthy.

What is the best vacation you have ever been on?

My family and I went to Mexico every summer growing up.

If you could have an unlimited supply of one thing, what would it be?

Bean and cheese burritos

What is your favorite thing to do on a day off?

Do something I’ve never done before, such as exploring a new place in D.C.

Bucket list sporting event that you would want to attend one day (as a fan)?

Dodger’s World Series Championship game.
