MALIBU, Calif. – The Maryland women’s tennis team (1-1, 0-0 B1G) dropped its opening match of the ITA Kickoff Weekend on Saturday, falling to No. 6 Pepperdine, 4-0.
The Waves controlled the match from the beginning, capturing the doubles point to open the match. They then kept up the pace when singles play began, picking up wins at first, fifth and sixth singles to clinch the victory. Maryland was able to battle throughout, but Pepperdine’s lineup closed well and was able to take home the three victories.
The three remaining singles matches remain unfinished with the match ending once one team reached four points.
“Pepperdine is a strong team and they showed that today,” head coach Daria Panova said. “We found some things we need to work on and improve individually and as a group. Playing teams like this will help us down the line and we’re excited for another opportunity to face a quality opponent tomorrow afternoon.”
Maryland will now play either Rice or Oregon to conclude the ITA Kickoff Weekend on Sunday afternoon. The match will begin at 1 p.m. and will be streamed here.
