Charles Leads #13 Terps Past #18 Iowa

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Sophomore Kaila Charles had her sixth double-double of the season to lead the No. 13 Maryland women’s basketball team (14-2, 3-0 Big Ten) past No. 18 Iowa (14-2, 2-1), 80-64, Thursday evening in the XFINITY Center.

Charles had a game-high 24 points and a team-high 11 boards against the Hawkeyes. Sophomore Blair Watson added 13 points while freshman Channise Lewis had 11.

Maryland took a 31-17 lead at the end of the first quarter, led by 62 percent shooting from the field. The Terrapins had no turnovers in the first and held the Hawkeyes to just 33 percent shooting. Charles scored 12 points in the opening quarter.

The Terps started the second on an 0-for-8 scoring drought, but Kristen Confroy had a pair of threes to help Maryland take a 49-38 lead into halftime.

The Terrapins held Iowa to just eight third-quarter points while forcing eight turnovers from the Hawkeyes. Watson had three three-pointers in the fourth quarter and Maryland took its largest lead with 6:02 remaining, 76-51.

The Terps held Iowa’s top scorer Megan Gustafson, who came into the game averaging 22.5 points per game, to just 15 points.

Maryland has won the last six straight matchups with Iowa since joining the league in 2014.

Since joining the Big Ten in 2014-15, the Terrapins are 61-3 (.954) vs. their conference opponents, including their nine wins in the Big Ten Tournament. Maryland is 32-3 (.914) against Big Ten teams at home in XFINITY Center and has won 18 straight conference games at home. All are under Brenda Frese

Maryland is ranked No. 13 in the Associated Press poll and in the USA Today Coaches poll.
