#14 Terrapins Host Illini in B1G Opener

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The 14th-ranked Maryland women’s basketball team (11-2) will open Big Ten play vs. Illinois (9-5) on Thursday at 6 p.m. at the XFINITY Center. For tickets, click here or call 1-800-IM-A-TERP.

Participants in Maryland Women’s Basketball summer camps may claim a free youth ticket to the game.

The Terrapins won at Coppin State, 113-49, on Dec. 20, before the Christmas break. Junior guard Eleanna Christinaki led Maryland with a career-high 32 points in her debut as a Terp. She went 12-20 from the field with six threes. Blair Watson hit seven threes for 23 points, Kaila Charles added 19 points and Brianna Fraser scored 12 with 12 rebounds.

Christinaki was named to the Big Ten Player of the Week Honor Roll Tuesday for her performance against the Eagles.

Seven Terrapins are scoring in double figures - Eleanna Christinaki (32.0), Kaila Charles (18.3), Blair Watson (13.8), Ieshia Small (12.3), Stephanie Jones (12.2), Kristen Confroy (10.6) and Brianna Fraser (10.9).

Watson (+10.9), Charles (+8.9) and Jones (+7.5) are currently the Big Ten's top three most improved scorers. Small (+7.2) is No. 6, Confroy (+5.5) is No. 13 and Fraser (+4.8) is No. 14 in the league.

The Terrapins own the all-time series vs. Illinois, 7-0. Last year, Maryland won 94-49 in Champaign on Jan. 26, then 84-59 in College Park on Feb. 9.

Since joining the Big Ten in 2014-15, the Terrapins are 58-3 (.951) vs. their conference opponents, including their nine wins in the Big Ten Tournament. In the 15 years under head coach Brenda Frese, the Terps are 70-7 (.909) against their Big Ten opponents. Frese is 82-13 (.863) all-time vs. Big Ten opponents, which includes her time as head coach at Minnesota and at Ball State. Maryland is 30-3 (.909) against Big Ten teams at home in XFINITY Center. All are under Frese. 

Maryland is ranked No. 15 in the Associated Press poll and No. 14 in the USA Today Coaches poll.

After Thursday’s matchup, the Terrapins will play at Penn State (9-4) Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Bryce Jordan Center. The Terps-Lady Lions matchup will be televised around the world on the Big Ten Network. Click here for your channel number for BTN. Fans outside the U.S. can watch here.
