Terps Open Big Ten Play with Purdue Friday

COLLEGE PARK, Md. --  Maryland (6-2) opens up its 2017-18 Big Ten slate Friday as the Terps host Purdue (6-2) for the Boilermakers’ third-ever visit to the XFINITY Center. The game will be broadcast live on the Big Ten Network at 7:00 pm. 

storylines

• The series is tied 2-2 all-time between the two schools, with Maryland picking up the first two victories in the series after joining the Big Ten. 

• Sophomore Kevin Huerter was lights out for the Terps against Syracuse on Nov. 27, finishing with 23 points on 8-for-11 shooting. Huerter tied his career high with seven three pointers made as the Clifton Park, N.Y. native enjoyed a pseudo-homecoming playing in front of a large contingent of family and friends.

• Maryland was excellent sharing the basketball against the Orange, finishing with a season-best 22 assists on 23 made field goals. Justin Jackson and Darryl Morsell both notched career-highs with five assists apiece, as the Terps posted their highest assist total since notching 22 against Minnesota last season on Feb. 22. 

• Freshman Bruno Fernando has been highly efficient from the field so far this season, shooting 33-of-50 (66.0%) through his first eight games. Fernando has thrived as Maryland’s rim protector on the defensive end, finishing with three blocks in five straight games. 

• Maryland has out-rebounded seven of its eight opponents this season, averaging 40.0 rebounds per game. Maryland’s rebounding margin of +12.1 ranks eighth in the nation (as of 11/29), while the Terps are holding opponents to 37.2% shooting.

Anthony Cowan Jr. has led the Terps is scoring in six of eight games this season, averaging 14.8 points per game. The Bowie, Md. native had a career day on Nov. 15, finishing with 25 points and 10 rebounds, both career highs, as Maryland used a strong shooting performance to beat Butler 79-65.
