HARTFORD, Conn. -- Sophomore guard Kaila Charles led the game with 29 points and 12 rebound but the No. 15 Maryland women’s basketball team (2-2) was unable to overcome top-ranked UConn (3-0) in a 97-72 contest Sunday afternoon.
“UConn is a really veteran, experience team, and it showed tonight, especially in the first quarter,” head coach Brenda Frese said. “It’s not a consolation prize, but I’m pleased that with such a young team, we were able to do some nice things and force 25 turnovers.”
The Huskies outscored the Terps 32-11 in the first quarter and took a 46-21 lead into halftime.
Charles had 19 points in the second half as Maryland kept fighting. The Terrapins outscored the Huskies 31-22 in the fourth, but the deficit was too much for Maryland to overcome.
Sophomore guard Blair Watson tallied seven steals in the game while Charles had five. They each had two blocks.
Next, the Terrapins welcome Howard (0-3) to the XFINITY Center Tuesday at 6 p.m. For tickets, click here.
