Terrapins Garner Big Ten Honors

ROSEMONT, Ill. – Four members of the seventh-ranked Maryland field hockey team (13-5, 6-2 B1G) garnered All-Big Ten accolades the league announced Wednesday. The awards were voted on by the conference’s nine head coaches.

Senior Lein Holsboer and junior Linnea Gonzales were named to the All-Big Ten First Team. Senior Carrie Hanks earned All-Big Ten Second Team honors. Bodil Keus was named Freshman of the Year.

This is Holsboer’s second straight All-Big Ten honor, as she was named to the Second Team last year. She is leading the Terrapins in scoring with 11 goals and in assists with 10 so far this year. Last season, she was also named an NFHCA All-American.

Gonzales was the conference’s Freshman of the Year in 2015 and also earned Second Team and NFHCA All-American honors that season as well. This year, she’s scored seven goals with two assists.

Hanks has started all 87 games of her four-year career at Maryland. She has anchored Maryland’s defense throughout her career. This year, she scored the game-winning goal in double overtime to life the Terps past No. 6 Penn State, 2-1, last month.

Keus has started in all but one game for the Terrapins this year and is second on the team in scoring with nine goals this season. She was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week on Oct. 16 and Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 11. She is the 10th player in program history to earn conference Freshman of the Year honors.

Second-seeded Maryland will take on third-seeded Penn State (15-3, 6-2) in the Big Ten Tournament Semifinals Friday at 1:30 p.m. in East Lansing, Mich.

The Terrapins have won seven games straight, including four over ranked teams. Most recently, they beat Michigan State, 3-0, Sunday in the Big Ten Quarterfinals.

Maryland has scored 27 goals in the last seven games. They scored 26 in their previous 11 games to start the season. Six Terrapins have scored five goals or more.

Head coach Missy Meharg is in her 30th season as head coach of the Terrapins. She’s led them to a record of 540-133-9 (.798), seven NCAA titles, 23 conference titles and 16 Final Fours. She has been named NFHCA National Coach of the Year an unprecedented nine times in her career.

Maryland was tabbed as the No. 7 team in the country in the Penn Monto/Division I Coaches poll released Oct. 31.

Top-seeded Michigan (17-2, 8-0) and fourth-seeded Northwestern (14-5, 6-2) play at 11 a.m. Friday in the first semifinal.
