COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Frantzdy Pierrot scored in the 38th minute to push Coastal Carolina past the third-ranked Maryland men’s soccer team, 1-0, at Ludwig Field on Friday night.
The Terrapins (10-3-2. 5-0-2 Big Ten) were unable to grab an equalizer following the Chanticleers goal, despite some decent opportunities. Junior Sebastian Elney led the Terps with a pair of shots.
“Full credit to Coastal Carolina. I thought they came in here and looked fresh and energetic,” Maryland head coach Sasho Cirovski. “That was a good effort from a good team. There’s a reason they’ve been to seven NCAA Tournaments over the last seven years. All we can do now is file this and move on."
Senior George Campbell forced a save on his right footed effort in the 15th minute, Maryland’s first shot. Junior Eryk Williamson weaved through the Coastal Carolina defense and got off a shot in the 35th minute, but his effort was parried away.
Pierrot’s goal was of the spectacular variety, After receiving the ball on a throw in into the box, he bicycle-kicked the ball to the far post and past Dayne St. Clair in goal.
Maryland pushed for a tying goal in the second 45 minutes. Elney received good service in the box from Matt Di Rosa in the 54th minute, but could not get his header on frame. In the waning seconds, the ball dropped to Gordon Wild in the box, but his right-footed six-yard shot was blocked.
Maryland returns to action Tuesday as VCU visits Ludwig Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. and fans can see the match live on BTN Plus.
