COLLEGE PARK, Md. - With a roster featuring 10 returning players, including three starters Maryland began practice this week in anticipation of its 2017-18 season. Head coach Mark Turgeon walked off the court earlier this week encouraged with his team's approach and energy after a spirited hour and 45 minute practice.
"The effort has been great," said Turgeon. "I'm impressed with their attention to detail and our guys have shown a lot of enthusiasm. Now we'll have to continue to sustain that but the returning players know what needs to be done and are bringing our young guys along."
Sophomore point guard Anthony Cowan, who led the team in assists last season, has been encouraged with the start of practice.
"Things are moving a lot faster, we're much more fluid," said Cowan "Our young guys are really picking things up quickly, and we all seem to be really comfortable with each other on the court."
Cowan talked about his newly formed relationship with freshman Darryl Morsell, a standout guard at local Baltimore high school power Mt. St. Jospeh's.
"Last year Melo [Trimble] and I were constantly pushing each other and this year Darryl and I have been doing the same thing."
"They're smart players, our young guys have really grasped the concepts of our system. Sean is a knowledgeable player who's been around the game of college basketball."
When Morsell was approached about how others were impressed with his preparation, he shared that he was a quick learner and quipped, "Coach Turgeon said I expect you to pick this up fast."
Morsell shared that his competitive nature and the fact that he loves being challenged has helped him with his adjustment from high school to the college game.
Turgeon's team features the aforementioned Cowan, Kevin Huerter and Justin Jackson who led Maryland to its best start in school history last year en route to advancing to its third straight NCAA appearance under Turgeon.
"It's exciting to be back," said Turgeon. "We have a really good group to work with."
Maryland will open its preseason with Randolp-Macon on Thursday, November 2 at the XFINITY Center.
