CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Senior Kate Waters notched her first goal of the season late in the second half to push Maryland to its first conference victory Friday night on the road vs. Illinois. The win moves the Terps to 7-1-1 overall on the year and 1-1 in Big Ten play, while the Illini drop to 3-8 (0-3 B1G).
Waters finally broke through for the visitors in the 84th minute of the contest at Illinois Soccer Stadium. A throw in from the right sideline inside Illinois territory created the score, after the Hudson, Ohio native collected a loose ball from just outside the 18-yard box. Waters took a touch and fired a shot off her right foot to the opposite side, as the ball bounced off the left post and into the net to give UMD the 1-0 lead.
Illinois would press late, earning a free kick right outside the box with just eight seconds to go. But the hosts’ final attempt of the evening was easily collected by goalkeeper Rachel Egyed as time expired to preserve the 1-0 victory. Egyed would finish with five saves on the night, while the Terps outshot Illinois 16-9 in the game.
Maryland’s best opportunity in the opening half came in the 29th minute, as Jlon Flippens found an opening near the center of the box. She took a pass from the right wing and launched a strike off her left foot on frame, but the ball ricocheted off the cross bar high as the Illini escaped danger.
Hope Lewandoski had a quality opportunity earlier in the 11th minute, taking a long pass behind the Illinois backline for a one-on-one chance at the keeper. Her show was blocked wide right, and the hosts contained the ensuing corner to keep things scoreless early.
The Terps will return to the field Sunday for a road match at Northwestern. Kickoff is slated for 2:00 pm ET and the match can be seen on BTN Plus.
