COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Paced by the strong play of freshman Zoe Kulkarni, the Maryland women's tennis team ended day one at the 2017 Bedford Cup with a 3-0 record.
Kulkarni got the day started with a strong 6-3, 6-1 win over Sara Swift from Georgetown. Sophomore Katsiaryna Yemelyanenka -- who had a bye in the first round -- then secured Maryland's second victory of the day with a 6-2, 6-3 win against Annie Jaskilski of Delaware.
After falling 6-4 in the first set of her second round match, Kulkarni fell behind 3-0 in the second. The freshman battled back to even the score and then took the set by a score of 6-4. In a 10-point, third-set tiebreak, Kulkarni finished off Jona Roka of James Madison, winning 10-6.
