HUNTINGTON, W. Va. – Senior middle blocker Hailey Murray notched 14 kills on a .500 clip to lead the Maryland volleyball team (7-0) to a sweep (25-22, 25-15, 25-22) over Virginia Tech (5-3) in the Thunder Invite Saturday.
Freshman outside hitter Erika Pritchard had 11 kills while freshman opposite Samantha Drechsel led Maryland with four blocks. Pritchard, sophomore outside Gia Milana and junior libero Kelsey Wicinski each had eight digs.
The Terps hit .429 in the match while holding the Hokies to a .195 clip.
The teams traded points for the first half of the opening set but a pair of kills from Milana and an ace from Katie Myers helped the Terps get separation, 19-16. The Terps went ahead 23-17, but the Hokies prevented Maryland from getting to set point five times. Murray notched a kill to finally get the Terrapins to set point, and she combined for a block with Drechsel to win the first game, 25-22.
Maryland hit .571 with just one attack error as the team rolled in the second set. Kills from Pritchard and Gaskin forced a Hokie timeout at 14-9. A serving run from Taylor Smith helped Maryland go ahead, 19-11. Gaskin notched a kill to get to set point and Drechsel posted the set-winning kill at 25-15.
Virginia Tech took an early 9-6 lead in the third set, but Maryland worked back to tie, 11-11. Errors from the Terps gave the Hokies the lead back, but accurate hitting late in the set helped Maryland tie again, 18-18. After trading points, a block from Murray and Drechsel gave Maryland a 22-21 lead. Drechsel posted a solo block and Murray tallied the final two kills as the Terps completed the sweep with a 25-22 third game win.
Maryland takes on host Marshall in the final match of the Thunder Invite Saturday at 7 p.m.
