COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Gordon Wild scored the lone goal in No. 6 Maryland’s 1-0 shutout of Cal Poly Monday night at Ludwig Field.

Wild – who has a team-high three goals in 2017 – notched the penalty kick winner in the 26th minute as Maryland (4-0) outshot the Mustangs 15-3.

Cal Poly crowded six defenders and four midfielders near the Mustang goal for the majority of the contest and did not register a shot on goal. Keeper Simon Boehme made seven saves and the Mustangs committed a mere five fouls.

Wild’s goal was set up by a foul to D.J. Reeves on the far side of the box in the first half.

“I’m very pleased with a shutout and a victory tonight,” head coach Sasho Cirovski said. “Cal Poly has been out here on the East Coast for a long time so they have some fatigued players and they were missing a few players. But I think they showed us a tremendous amount of respect with their tactical approach and defensive posture in the game today. I thought our guys managed it well.

“We were clearly in control the whole time and I would have liked to see more sharpness with a couple more goals. But you have to give a lot of credit to their goalkeeper who had an amazing game tonight. He is a terrific goalkeeper and he kept the ball out of the net at least three times otherwise the ball is in the back of the net. Give full credit to them and it’s on to Indiana."

The Terps will face their first Big Ten test Friday night as Indiana visits Ludwig Field for a 7 p.m. match on Big Ten Network.
