COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Six University of Maryland student-athletes had the opportunity to learn first-hand the ins and outs of the financial world after taking a trip to Navient in early August.
The day trip, led by Director of Student-Athlete Engagement and Professional Development Dr. Jamie Williams, gave the group of business majors a chance opportunity to visit with a number of business unit leaders at the organization. Marcos Bronfman, an executive at Navient and University of Maryland alum, welcomed the Terps to the company’s Reston, Va. offices.
Kiernan Keller (track & field), Gia Milana (volleyball), Kelee Lepage (field hockey), Jaron Smith (wrestling), Jahi Jones (wrestling) and Ekaterina Tour (Tennis) spent half a day learning about the evolution of the student loan market, Navient's business overview, its corporate finance overview, different roles within corporate finance and data modeling. The presentation was interactive as questions from the students were allowed throughout each session.
“I thought the experience was really helpful,” said Smith. “It was interesting to hear from people who work in the financial sector and get an idea of how a financial institution like Navient operates. So I think I got a lot out of it in terms of what interests me in the field.”
