COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Senior linebacker Jermaine Carter Jr. was selected to the Butkus Award Watch List for the second straight year, it was announced on Monday. The Butkus Award annually recognizes the nation’s top collegiate linebacker.
Carter, who was also tabbed for the Chuck Bednarik Award Watch List last week, has garnered Honorable Mention All-Big Ten accolades in each of the last seasons.
Semifinalists for the Butkus Award will be named on October 30 with finalists being selected on November 20. The winner will be notified on or before December 5.
Carter has started a team-high 25 consecutive games and his 213 tackles over the last two seasons leads the Terps.
The Fort Washington native started all 13 games and led Maryland with 110 tackles during his junior season in 2016. His 8.5 tackles per game ranked seventh in the Big Ten and he was second on team with 6.0 sacks and third with 9.0 tackles for loss.
Carter Jr. added to his stat line by forcing two fumbles, four pass breakups and grabbing an interception that he returned for a touchdown. He had a big game in the regular season finale win against Rutgers, posting a career-high 15 tackles, 2.5 TFLs, 2.0 sacks, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.
Maryland players have now been named to six preseason watch lists. They include: senior linebacker Jermaine Carter Jr. – Bednarik Award (National Defensive Player of the Year), Butkus Award (top linebacker); senior kicker Adam Greene – Allstate AFCA Good Works; sophomore punter Wade Lees – Ray Guy Award (top punter); junior center Brendan Moore – Rimington Trophy (top center); junior wide receiver D.J. Moore – Paul Hornung Award (most versatile player).
