COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Head coach Sasho Cirovski has announced the addition of four players for the 2017 Maryland men’s soccer season. Chase Gasper, Johannes Bergmann, Misha de Waal-Hart and Alejandro Chacon will join the Terps this fall.
Gasper, a transfer from UCLA who is eligible to compete immediately for the Terps, spent three seasons with the Bruins, earning Soccer America, College Soccer News and Top Drawer Soccer second team All-Freshman honors as a rookie before racking up honorable mention All-Pac-12 accolades as a sophomore. The 6-0 defender graduated from Gonzaga College High School in D.C. and played club soccer with current Terp Jake Rozhansky at Bethesda-Olney Soccer Academy. A consistent member of the U.S. U-18 National Team, Gasper has competed for the U.S. at the 2013 Limoges Tournament in France and in the 2014 Copa Del Atlantico in Las Palmas, Spain. He redshirted last season due to injury and has two seasons of eligibility remaining.
A 6-2 defender from Germany, Bergmann has three years of eligibility remaining when arrives to College Park. Bergmann has spent time with RW Erfurt (a German youth Bundesliga club) and the Germany U18 and U20 National Teams. He spent the last three seasons with FSV Wacker 90 Nordhausen.
Misha de Waal-Hart hails from Brisbane, Australia but has Dutch heritage and has played in Holland for the last year and a half. A 6-3 goalkeeper, de Waal-Hart played at Kelvin Grove State College, graduating in 2015. He then played for the Dutch club MVV Maastricht in Holland.
Chacon - a 6-2 goalkeeper from Caracas, Venezuela - played club soccer for Caracas FC and, along with de Waal-Hart, will help fill the void left by Justin Bajek (transferred to Delaware) and Peter Janda (pursued professional contract).
Maryland opens its season on August 25 at Santa Clara.
