CHICAGO, Ill. – University of Maryland right-handed pitcher Brian Shaffer earned Big Ten Pitcher of the Week honors, the conference announced Monday afternoon.
Shaffer set a new career-high with 11 strikeouts over eight and a third innings of work against Penn State on Friday. The junior scattered four hits, walked just one and gave up a single earned run.
Shaffer’s ERA now sits at 1.83, third best in the Big Ten. He leads the conference in innings pitched (64.0) and strikeouts (67). His opposing batting average of .194 is third in the Big Ten.
The honor is Shaffer’s second Pitcher of the Week award of the year and third of his career. Shaffer was also named to the midseason USA Baseball Golden Spikes Award watch list this week. The award is given to the top amateur baseball player in the country.
Maryland returns to action Wednesday at William & Mary. First pitch is set for 6 p.m., and fans can listen to the action live on the Maryland Baseball Network.
