EAST LANSING, Mich. – Maryland got a solid outing from pitcher Hannah Dewey, allowing just two runs on four hits, but couldn’t convert on offense as Michigan State came out ahead 2-0 Saturday afternoon. The Terps were credited with just two hits in the game, while the Spartans manufactured runs in the third and fourth to move to 18-11 (2-3 B1G) on the season. UMD now stands at 7-25-1 (0-5 B1G).

Maryland’s defense had several highlight moments in the game at Secchia Stadium, which included two diving plays in center field from Kassidy Cross and Kristina Dillard’s 13th runner caught stealing on the season.

Michigan State managed to break through in the third inning, as a Lea Foerster double brought in a runner. The Spartans would tack one on in the fourth, after a wild pitch brought Kaitlyn Eveland to the plate to give her squad a 2-0 edge.

The Terps had solid scoring opportunities in nearly identical second and fourth innings, twice getting runners to first and second with one out. MSU’s Bridgette Rainey shut the door, getting four strikeouts to close out both frames while finishing with eight on the day.

The teams will be back in action for the series finale tomorrow at 1 pm.
