RICHMOND, Va. – Behind the strong play of Ekaterina Tour and Caroline Williams, the No. 33 Maryland women’s tennis team defeated No. 50 VCU, 4-3 for its fourth consecutive victory.

For the 10th consecutive match, Maryland got out to a 1-0 lead after earning the doubles point. Duos of Ekaterina Tour and Caroline Williams, and Arnelle Sullivan and Cassandre Thebault both picked up wins for the Terps.

Sullivan/Thebault’s win moved their record to 4-0 on the season, and Tour/Williams’ victory gave them a three-match winning streak at first doubles.

Williams continued her strong play when she took the court in singles. The sophomore’s 6-0, 6-3 decision was her fourth-straight win and gave the Terps a 2-0 advantage.

Fellow sophomore Arnelle Sullivan kept the ball rolling for the Terps, and her 6-2, 6-0 win at third singles gave Maryland a 3-1 lead after VCU picked up a point at fifth singles shortly before.

VCU responded with wins at first and fourth singles, and all eyes then turned to second singles with the match tied 3-3.

Tour emerged victorious for the Terps, and picked up a 6-4, 7-5, decision to clinch the 4-3 Maryland win. Tour’s seventh victory of the season is the most on the team and the junior has now won in back-to-back appearances.

“It's great to get a second straight win over a ranked opponent on the road,” head coach Daria Panova said. “VCU played very well and they really made us fight today. I’m very proud of Katya for stepping up when we needed her the most and she did a great job clinching the win for us.”

With the win, Maryland has matched its season win total from its 2015-16 campaign. The Terps’ 10-1 season record is the best start through 11 matches in program history.

Maryland’s 5-0 road record is the second-best start in program history, and they are now 3-1 against ranked opponents this season.

Maryland will wrap up its non-conference schedule with a mid-week bout against Liberty. The third match of a seven-match road trip will take place on Wednesday, March 22nd, at 2 p.m.
