Xavier Tops Terps in NCAA First Round

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Freshman Kevin Huerter scored 19 points but No. 11 seed Xavier upended sixth-seeded Maryland, 76-65, in the first round of the 2017 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament Thursday at Amway Center.

Huerter added a team-high four rebounds and five assists as Maryland ended its season at 24-8, marking the third-straight season the Terps have racked up 24 or more wins in regular season play. Freshman Justin Jackson tallied 14 points and fellow classmate Anthony Cowan chipped in with five assists. Junior Melo Trimble (13 points) racked up his 31st double-digit scoring performance of the season and ended the season with 22 straight.

The Terps led by one at the half but Xavier hit six threes and shot 52 percent from the floor in the second half en route to the win.

Thursday's game was the collegiate finale for seniors Damonte Dodd and L.G. Gill. Dodd finished his four-year career ranked eighth on Maryland's career blocks list.
