ORLANDO, Fla. – The Maryland men’s basketball team took the floor at Amway Center for the first time Wednesday in anticipation of its first round matchup against No. 11 seed Xavier. The sixth-seeded Terps and Musketeers are set to tip off at 6:50 pm on TNT on Thursday.
The Terps began their day with an open practice in front of hundreds of fans, including a strong contingency of Maryland supporters, in downtown Orlando Wednesday evening.
Maryland also had a half hour media session, answering questions about their upcoming matchup against the Musketeers. Head coach Mark Turgeon, junior Melo Trimble and freshman Kevin Huerter took to the dais to discuss the Terps’ third consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament.
“Obviously, we are very happy to be here in Orlando,” head coach Mark Turgeon said. “Every team wants to be in the NCAA Tournament. Everybody's goal is to be in the NCAA Tournament. I wasn't sure when the year started. We had so many new players. It's been a fantastic year.
“We're looking forward to the tournament and playing a great Xavier team. It's an experienced, well-coached team. We've had a great week of practice and fired up for tomorrow night's game.”
Maryland (24-8) is making its 27th appearance in the NCAA Tournament this season and advanced to its first Sweet Sixteen since 2003 a year ago.
