COLLEGE PARK, Md. – After leading the No. 1 Maryland women’s lacrosse team to two wins last week, three Terps earned Big Ten weekly honors. Attacker Megan Whittle was named Offensive Player of the Week, goalie Megan Taylor was selected as Defensive Player of the Week and midfielder Kali Hartshorn earned Freshman of the Week honors.
Against then-No. 4 Syracuse last Saturday, Whittle set a career high with seven goals and nine points. She also picked up two ground balls and two draw controls. Whittle also notched a hat trick and two draw controls vs. Boston College last Wednesday. The Woodbine, Md., native leads Maryland’s second-ranked offense with 21 goals.
Taylor broke out for a career-high 18 saves against the Orange, holding Syracuse’s top two goal scorers off the score sheet. She notched a .720 save percentage, three ground balls and two caused turnovers. Taylor made seven saves vs. the Eagles last week as well. The Glenelg, Md., native was also named the Epoch/US Lacrosse National Player of the Week. This season, Taylor ranks fifth nationally with a .573 save percentage and 10th with an 8.20 goals against average.
Hartshorn posted nine points in two games last week, including a season-high five (4G, 1A) vs. Syracuse. She also tallied six draw controls in each game last week and two ground balls vs. the Orange. Hartshorn was also named Inside Lacrosse’s Co-Rookie of the Week.
This is Whittle’s second Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week honors this season and Taylor’s fourth Defensive Player of the Week nod.
The top-ranked Terps (6-0) host Johns Hopkins (7-1) to open Big Ten play at noon Sunday on the Big Ten Network.
